BEN ASHTON

BEN ASHTON - DECEMBER 2012

Since arriving in Sydney with little more than a backpack, a record box, and high hopes in the spring of 2011, Ben Ashton has quickly established himself as one of his adopted city’s busiest DJs. His list of supports in 2012 alone reads like a who’s who of the deep (and sometimes dark) tech house sound he favours – think Radio Slave, Subb-an, Margaret Dygas, Nick Curly, Francois K, Yousef, Prosumer, Thomas Schumacher, and warming up for Huxley at his own Bad Apple night for starters – though it’s his ability to control a diverse range of dancefloors that has seen him become Sydney’s newest warm-up specialist.

When he arrived in Australia, though, the Cambridge, UK expat had no grand plans to make such an impressive mark on the local scene – he was just another traveller making the traditional two year pilgrimage Down Under. With fellow Brit Jack Fuller by his side, Ben eventually set up shop in Sydney and discovered an opening for the underground sound of Europe that has pride of place in his crate. Ben and Jack linked up with local selectors Antoine Vice and Tim Reeves-Smith (aka Whitecat) and the Bad Apple club night was born. Kicking off at Kings Cross hotspot Hugo’s before moving into the more intimate confines of GoodGod Small Club, it’s now alternating monthly between the quite literally ‘underground’ rooms of One22 and The Cave at Chinese Laundry in Sydney’s CBD.

Bad Apple has since hosted a branded room when Ibiza party Circoloco came to town, and it’s not the only night that Ben has a hand in running. See also Just Wax, the semi-regular vinyl only event that sees guest selectors throwing down everything from George Benson to French disco to classic hip hop, and 150 Only, a restricted capacity affair which launched with Berlin-based minimal-tech DJ Margaret Dygas in the headline slot. And when not running those events, he’s in-demand from a range of local crews, with S*A*S*H, Musik Matters, Switch, the Finely Tuned event umbrella (Agwa Yacht Club/Circoloco/Lost Disco), and Secret Society just some of the parties he regularly spins at.

When tackling warm-up duties for Margaret Dygas, or the countless other internationals he’s set the scene for in Sydney, Ben’s philosophy is to bring the style and approach of the headliner into his own sets without aping them outright. Ben describes his sound as “very deep and groovy and driving”, mixing the music of labels like W Records, Atlantic, ONE, Desolat and Robsoul into his own dancefloor-focused brew. At a larger party like Circo Loco, he’ll favour a bouncier take on the house music sound – and he’s not afraid to throw a classic curveball in there, not matter what the venue.

That taste for the classics began in 1997, when as a 16-year-old Ben purchased his first set of turntables and tormented his parental home with the jungle and drum’n’bass sounds he’d become obsessed with through the DJ sets of Grooverider and Micky Finn. This progressed onto UK Garage and then onto Chicago house, his skills as a selector seeing him regularly play around Cambridge, London, and across the pond for a series of gigs through the European mainland.

For now, though, Ben will be calling Australia home indefinitely. His first musical creations are almost ready for release from his home studio, his weekly Sydney and monthly Melbourne gig commitments show no signs of slowing, and the UK’s loss is most definitely Australia’s gain.

Magda Bytnerowicz

Producer or DJ or Both

Predominantly a DJ, but working on producing when I have the time. In fact, I've got a collaboration with Trinity & Beyond forthcoming on Pinksilver Records later this year. Stay tuned!

Describe Your Sound

I find this a really hard thing to do, as I go all over the shop from beautiful funk, soul and disco to house in all its forms through to proper heads down techno, depending on the gig and the crowd. I just try and play what moves me; it tends towards the more organic whether in instrumentation or arrangement but really as long as I dig it I'll play it if the time is right.

Where you regularly play, or have played

I run a party called 4our with Trinity, we put on warehouse parties in the inner city as well as hosting the occasional international guest - this year Steffi at Goodgod Small Club and Eric Cloutier at One22. I play at those venues probably most frequently apart from the warehouses. Also all over town over the years, from Marrickville Bowlo to Phoenix Bar ages ago. In terms of residencies, I guess you could say I'm a regular guest for my dear friends HAHA as well as special appearances at CO-OP back to back with Claire Morgan as the late night phenomenon MORGDA.

Favorite Night spot / Venue

Hands down Marrickville Bowling Club (sorry everwhere else!) - either for Mad Racket or HAHA parties. Every time I'm there it's like having a debauched family dinner with a much better soundtrack.

Weapon of Choice ( ie Turntables/ CDJs/ Ableton/ serato/ Traktor/ vinyl ect)

I prefer to play vinyl, and top it up with CDs though at the moment I'm contemplating switching to a USB stick instead of taking hours to burn WAVs. More room for records in the bag!

Soon to be Pinksilver

(Nathan Canizares & Ignacio Pinzon)

Describe Your Sound?

You could say that ‘our sound’ is still developing, the EDM scene is so overcrowded with junk and our aim is to be unique, but also be ourselves. For the time being you can expect a range of tasteful house (tech, electro & progressive). We are currently working on a string of original tracks and remixes and we ask people to keep an open eye for our upcoming releases!

Obscur3d (Harrison Moore), Wollongong

Producer or DJ or Both?

Spend most of my time primarily producing but don’t mind getting the decks out every now and then

Describe Your Sound

Deep House/progressive house/tech/experimental/chill/Instrumental Hip-hop with jazz influences/glitch. At the moment focusing more on deep house, with ambient soundscapes, chordy stabs, strong rhythmic bass lines, and a fat kick to keep it all together. Lately I’ve been appreciating tunes that have a real raw feel to them, slightly off beat percussion, un-mastered stems, and in moderation vinyl distortion. A lot of people have said my music is good to “study” to and I also appreciate it more when it’s in the background & when I’m not analysing the shit out of it.

Where you regularly play, or have played

The Bar next door to Samuels (once a month)
Northgong Hotel
Illawarra Brewery (with the LAZE crew)
Chinese Laundry (recently)

AKA (Sam), Wollongong (LAZE, SNEAK)

AKA

Producer or DJ or Both?

DJ/Hobby Producer.

Describe Your Sound

Eclectic, I love playing all kinds of music. My record crates range from like 100 -140 BPM! From super low slung house all the way through to stomping industrial techno. Needs to be unique, with strange captivating sounds or an undeniable classic groove. I love mechanical sounds, moving synths or dubby soundscapes.

Where you regularly play, or have played

Have played regularly in my home town of Wollongong for the past 3-4 years at most of the venues. Played at a few spots in Sydney, most recently at One22. Did a few stints in Canberra playing for the PANG and Effigy crews. Some of my biggest gigs have been warming up for Oliver Huntemann, Kaiserdisco, and Superpitcher. Currently playing weekly at Illawarra Brewery and at our own events Laze and Sneak.

Favorite Night Spot / Venue

At the moment definitely One22.

Weapon of Choice

Nothing fancy.. Just straight up Vinyl & CD's

Pistolshrimp (Jono), Wollongong

Producer or DJ or Both?

-Been DJ'ing for a few years and with time am slowly working on the producing side of things especially more the deep house nu disco scene.

Describe Your Sound

-The sound i always endeavor to achieve is one that you can really relate to and feel whether you are sober, drunk, under the influence, young or old. I have always been influenced by house and jazz growing up so i am always going to be partial to a very funky liquid vibe yet over this past year i have swayed to the dark side and i am now emphatic about 'Nu disco' and 'G-house' which i think is a space to be watched in Australasia as it has the potential to really take off. In plane simple terms i like to be a cheeky charmeleon i.e play music that people like and can mouth or dance to, the ones people know, but, then at the same time push them to appreciate different, newer even more complementing versions of those originals they grew to like. Then with some other funk sprinkled on top to accent the vibe, like condiments do to a good meal, i think the recipe is set for a fun vibe. If your not talking to your audience with your music you may as well not be there i feel.

Where you regularly play, or have played

-Regularly play between the Five Islands Brewery with "LAZE", North Gong Hotel, Splashes, UOW Uni-Bar, Manly Wharf bar, Mrs Sippy, MEGA nightclub and have played at other venues like The Beach Bar, The Charles Hotel, Blue Note, CBD Hotel and on the 'Easy Life Radio Show' at Fevah FM

Favorite Night spot / Venue

I really enjoy the North Gong pub in how it is set out well for a good house music setting especially in the summer months, yet i think the Brewery has something special too with the LAZE crew establishing a really good vibe there with some solid house. However in the club scene i think Splashes is arguably one of the more real night clubs in Wollongong in terms of its lay out and acoustics, a big crowd in there is something really special.

Weapon of Choice

-Ive become accustomed to Pioneer and with such reliable equipment i haven't looked anywhere else, my home set up includes CDJ1000's running through a DJM-600 mixer with an EFX1000 for some extra fun. Ableton Live is also a well polished program for production and mixing.
